Job Description

Aerothermal Engineer - Cold Section (Fans and Compressors)

Full time

Bristol

An outstanding opportunity has arisen for an Aerothermal Engineer within our Defence business in Bristol.

In this role, you will be part of the fluid mechanics capability within the global mechanical systems ET&S organisation.

The Cold Section Aerothermal Engineer is responsible for the development of Aerothermal capability, both engine delivery from original inception and discussion with the airframers, through NPI, EDP on to Production and Fleet support and technology delivery from TRL1-7.

The Aerothermal capability covers gas path aerodynamics and thermodynamics and relies on skills in Computational Fluid Dynamics at a range of levels of fidelity and testing capability in a range of TRL rigs. Design and capability generation relies also on a knowledge and understanding of the interaction of these components both locally and at an engine level.

Join us and we’ll provide an environment where you can be yourself. An inclusive, digital-first culture that invests in you, gives you a platform for continuous learning, and access to an incredible breadth and depth of opportunities to grow your career.

We offer excellent development, a competitive salary and exceptional benefits. These include bonus, employee support assistance and employee discounts.

Hybrid working is a way in which our people can balance their time between the office, home or another remote location.  It’s a locally managed and flexed informal discretionary arrangement.  As a minimum we’re all expected to attend the workplace for collaboration and other specific reasons, frequency will depend on business needs, nature of role, what works for the team and for the individual.

What you will be doing:

In this role you will:

  • Define concepts for all gas path aerothermal systems that meet requirements. Evaluate using appropriate analytical methods to support accurate trades at platform and powerplant level and optimised concept down-select. Concepts delivered should be robust to uncertainties in engine interaction and manufacturing capabilities.
  • Integrate gas path aerothermal systems through interaction with all adjacent areas across the organisation to deliver optimised systems.
  • Perform appropriate verification and validation activity to ensure that requirements have been correctly met and that all gas path aerothermal related aspects of the powerplant (including numerical modelling) meet expectations. This will include the specification of appropriate test and measurement activity, the calibration of models against measured data, and the quantification of uncertainty.

  • Engage in Knowledge, Information and Data management for the gas path aerothermal systems, including ensuring adherence to appropriate procedures, technical buy-off, technical report writing, filing and cataloguing of supporting evidence, such as test analysis and numerical simulations. This includes ensuring retention for the relevant time period and deletion once the data or files are superseded or obsolete.
